Pinckney Elementary Student Earns SCSHA Ambassador Award
A second-grade student at C.C. Pinckney Elementary School in DoDEA Southeast has been named a recipient of the South Carolina Speech-Language-Hearing Association Ambassador Award.
Silas Cotterman received the honor, which recognizes exceptional growth, perseverance and advocacy in communication and learning.
He was nominated by Kerrie Ammons, CCC-SLP, a speech-language pathologist, for his dedication, resilience and meaningful progress in developing communication skills. The award celebrates students who show strong engagement and determination in speech-language services. Silas' selection highlights his commitment as a learner and the collaborative support from his educational team.
Speech-language pathologists play a key role in helping students build essential communication skills for academic success and social confidence. The early elementary years are a critical time for strengthening listening, speaking and language abilities. Honors like this one underscore the value of early intervention and individualized support.
As part of the recognition, Silas will meet South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster in May during the signing of the state's annual Better Speech and Hearing Proclamation. This experience emphasizes the importance of speech, language and hearing services for children and families statewide and gives young learners a chance to witness advocacy firsthand.
Silas will also be formally recognized at the South Carolina Speech-Language-Hearing Association Convention at the end of January.
C.C. Pinckney Elementary School is proud of Silas' accomplishment and grateful for the dedication of professionals like Ammons, whose work makes a lasting difference in students' lives.
Congratulations to Silas on this well-deserved honor!
