CC Pinckney Elementary hosts STEAM Day at Fort Jackson
CC Pinckney Elementary School hosted its annual STEAM Day on April 14, featuring student-led projects and hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
Community partners led interactive demonstrations, including representatives from the South Carolina Governor’s Schools for Science and Mathematics, Arts and Humanities, and Agriculture; DoWEA mathematics instructional systems specialist Deborah Iturrian; and the National Weather Service.
U.S. military and local emergency services units played a central role, showcasing real-world STEAM applications in medicine, robotics, engineering and music. Participants included the Headquarters Battalion Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems team, an Army medic, the South Carolina National Guard Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, the 282nd Army Band and the Fort Jackson Fire Department. Their involvement illustrated career pathways while underscoring leadership and service to the nation and community.
Event coordinator Jillian Huey said the day offered students rich, interactive experiences that spark creativity and build problem-solving skills.
“STEAM Day perfectly captures the school’s dedication to community partnership and its mission to educate, engage and empower students to become tomorrow’s innovative leaders,” Huey said.
Such events reinforce DoWEA’s emphasis on civics, patriotism and classical learning by connecting classroom concepts to civic responsibility and patriotic service.
